May father is visiting New Zealand and we’ve been out and about.. It’s been fun..

Just got his visa extended for another couple odd months.. So planning on a trip to the South Island.. Never been there.. It’s been raining since last week and we’ve had hailstones as well.. Ugh.. crap weather all around..

In the meantime I’m looking for a new job.. This place sucks.. This is probably the most unfriendly place I’ve worked at.. No idea why I stuck on for 3 years.! Well, maybe because they pay me well & the work is not too bad.. I’ve learnt a lot as well..

But time to move on.. They say that in the IT field, 3 years is the max you should stick to one company.. Not sure how it is in other countries.. but here in NZ, that’s how things go.
And I’m NOT the kind to work for the same company for 10, 20 years..! I certainly don’t want to go barmy..!!

So, I’ve been sending my CV around.. Been to an interview and a psychometric test following the interview.. Awaiting results on that.. That was THE MOST difficult exam I’ve done in my life.. Hope I’ve passed it.. don’t really care if I get the job or not.. but I do care about passing that test..!!

We’re enjoying our new house.. It’s not really new but we love it to bits.. I enjoy the garden a lot & there’s a lot of space to roam about.. Love the huge Pine trees and how they dance in the wind.. I think it’s a romantic spot to be in.. I love my deck and the veranda. We have afternoon tea there.. The garden needs some colour, which I’m planning on doing during next couple odd weeks.
That’s what’s going on in my life at the mo.. Sun’s shining outside after a long dull day..

Still Wednesday… Eagerly waiting till the weekend.. The past couple odd months have passed the same way..

Don’t feel like working today.. Don’t really want to go home either. I wish I had a close friend with whom I can go window shopping.. Yap till my mouth aches and laugh till I burst.. I miss having a friend sooooooo much.. I wish I were back home with my beautiful mother & father. Back with my friends having a good time.. Hmmmm.. Why does life have to be so darn complicated..?

I’m just feeling homesick I guess…
Next time I’ll blog something less depressing.. !! lol.. :)

Skiing @ Whakapapa

Went skiing during the weekend.. And y'day felt that I should create my own blogger account & put down my thoughts on zillions of subjects..

Pause..

But now when I actually sit down & try to jot a few lines about how my week has been, it hits me that the past week has been utterly monotonous..! I've had 12 hour days at office for the entire week..! But when I start programming & don't feel the time passing by.. 4 hours just passed by with me lifting my head to see why people were leaving. haha. It was 5pm. Man, I need to get a life.

I read a post by a fellow blogger the day before and now when I come to think of it, I couldn’t agree more..!
Nice to see a fellow Sri Lankan who sees the glass as half full. Whatever the political situation is back home, there are so many positive things about our country.. It’s only when you’ve had to work in other countries, among many different nationalities, that you realise the struggle you must go through just to make a name for yourself. I have a friend who migrated to the US & vowed never to return. Luckily the chap didn’t sell his house..! Six months later he was back in Sri Lanka. The lifestyle didn’t agree with him.. He was the manager of a five star hotel in Colombo.. And in the US, he was managing another prominent hotel. It wasn’t the dollars.. It was the lifestyle.. Of course he’s one of the fortunate ones who had the means..

Don’t get me wrong.. There’s nothing wrong with immigration. The more the merrier (as long as there’s a good balance).. I believe that people should have the freedom to live anywhere in the world as long as they abide by the law of the land.. However, it’s evident that some of us have unrealistic expectations from what we call as ‘Greener Pastures’..

Hey brother-man
There goes our young yet again
In plane-loads of wasting labour
Searching for much greener pastures!

But hey brother-man
Why are they going?
If just to clean the floors
Of factories and stores
In such intemperate climes?

This is an excerpt of a poem (Greener Pastures) by Mohammed Lamin Mansaray who’s also an IT specialist & writes poems from time to time..

Not all immigrants are thus unfortunate.. But I must say that a majority of people whom I’ve met, have had a rather miserable start. Fully qualified Doctors (immigrants of course) work as taxi drivers. No, they don’t do it for the fun of it. Another man I met at an electronics store used to be a qualified, highly paid programmer in India. He now works as a delivery man. No, he is not happy. He has been in the country for over 4 years. His wife who is also qualified, has not found permanent employment yet.

On a more positive note, I also know people who had next to nothing before they came here.. They now have a livelihood, a place to live, good schools for their children, decent friends.. The comforts which should be compulsory for all human beings. The comforts for which people seek greener pastures.. All's well that ends well.

But the question is, do all these people know about the downside of migrating to another country? Who is there to educate us about the pros & cons.?.. It is all very well for immigration agents to visit our countries & promise gold on the other side. But what’s the percentage of people who can actually visit the country they want to migrate to & decide whether or not they can find work or whether they can fit in?

Shall pen off for now.. Next time I’d probably put down my thoughts on growing up in a strange land.. Or maybe I'll talk about a more cheerful subject.. :-)
